David doesn’t go much into the low light capabilities, but this night time comparison shot by the folks at My First Drone makes the differences between the Hero 7’s electronic image stabilisation and the Osmo Pocket’s real gimbal stabilisation obvious. The GoPro is a true action camera that can take a hell of a lot of abuse, but I’d be very concerned if I crashed out while using the Osmo Pocketīut for general daily use? In not-so-potentially-destructive scenarios? Scenarios where GoPros are typically used simply due to the fact that they’re small and convenient? Well, for that, the DJI Osmo Pocket looks like it really stands a chance of usurping pretty much all action cameras.Īlthough the Hero 7 Black’s electronic image stabilisation is easily their best yet, this comparison, as well as the one below, really shows that it’s still no match for an actual gimbal – but how could it be? It also has to scale that image up to make the shot fill the frame the more stabilisation it has to do.Īnd as for low light shots, EIS can’t get rid of that motion blur in streetlights and cars with such a slow shutter. They’re both quite impressive, but still different cameras designed for different uses. Obviously, the GoPro Hero 7 Black and DJI Osmo Pocket are two very different types of camera. The colour, contrast and dynamic range coming out of the two looks fairly similar – at least in the daytime. The Osmo Pocket does have a stop wider aperture, though, at f/2.0 vs the Hero 7 Black’s f/2.8, theoretically making it better in lower light. If you don't need external audio the Hero 8 is probably my choice, just for the wider view, if you need external audio, Osmo is the only choice. Both cameras have a 1/2.3″ sensor with the ability to shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second. I shoot fishing videos, and the Osmo is now my primary head mounted camera and the Hero 8 is my B cam. The Osmo has a small adapter (still wish they would just have a built in 3.5mm) but it also has a nice little on screen audio level indicator so you know things are working. There is no indication it's not working, you just get back and start editing and find you have no audio. By doesn't work I mean it records no audio.

The media mod is total crap, beside some big usability issues, like having to totally remove it to change the battery, it just doesn't work sometimes. You either have to use the giant bulky audio adapter from Hero 7 days or use the media mod. The Hero 8's ability to use an external mic is total garbage however. Image quality is about even on them as is usability. As mentioned the Osmo does not get as wide as the Hero 8. But I didn't have that problem in any other mode. I only have one complaint about the gopro 8: I used it for nightlapses (the camera takes several long exposure photos and either save them or makes them into a video), and in that mode, and that mode only, dead pixels appear, which is a bummer.

You won't be able to register (and use) your osmo without the app while the gopro can be registered on the website and only if you want to update the firmware.

To me, that didn't justify the price difference with the osmo but I still ended up buying the gopro over the osmo because the osmo forces you to download the app while the gopro's is optional, and both apps are really invasive in terms of privacy. Also, If I remember correctly, it can shoot 2.7k in more configurations. However, the gopro has superview (really wide angle) which the osmo doesn't.

I didn't find a real difference between the two camera's image quality. I just had the same dilemna before summer. u/shickey maintains a videography-themed weekly challenge subreddit, so if you're looking for something to shoot head on over to /r/DoCreativeĬamera, NLE, year started, general location
